Advogato R.I.P
Wow, so Advogato is going to become "a read-only archive soon".
As I said in what may well be my final Advogato entry "it is sad to see The End but I have to admit I haven't really been reading much here lately (replaced mostly with Planets) or even posting (replaced by follower writes words)". If I hadn't already decided to host my own PyBloxsom install I'd probably be more concerned.
I agree with the comment "The diversity of the crowd...made the recentlog into something special". The one downside with the Planet world is they are by definition a narrow window into a specific FLOSS community--the benefit of Advogato and its recentlog was the breadth of community.
Appropriately enough, from my referrer log trawling I discovered a (private?) Planet instance that aggregates multiple Planets into one.
One interesting side-note is how Planet "solves" the issue of trust which Advogato was set up to experiment with. Essentially Planet solves the issue of who to trust by having a human in the loop to add blogs to the Planet. I guess it's possible for a Planet maintainer to abuse their position but... I wonder at what point trust becomes an issue for Planet communities?
Speaking of Planet, I was intrigued to see Mr Planet himself make the comment Advogato's recentlog was the inspiration for the Planet software.
In the past few years it's always interesting when you run into people who you recognise from Advogato--either to think "hey, I remember that person" or even occasionally "what, isn't that the whiny kid, when did they grow up?!" :-)
Guess this also means I now need to change my blog to do list from replicating these entries there to importing old entries to here from the XML file Advogato provides.
After nearly five years it looks like it's really going to be goodbye.
At least until I reappear--I know someone who's got an unexpected increase in workload... :-)
